If you own a safe and have shared the combination with multiple people, you’ve lost total control. When one of them leaves your employment or your association, when relations with that individual go south, it’s a good idea to change the combo.
How to Reset Digital and Mechanical Locks
Depending on the circumstances, resetting a safe’s combination can be relatively easy. First, the safe must be open in order to reset it. If the combination is resettable by the user (most are), the documentation that came with the safe will contain instructions on how to reset it.
If the lock is digital, a factory preset code will be listed in the safe’s operating manual. Typically there will be a “Program” button on the keypad. When it’s pressed, the old combination is erased. Then you enter the factory code, the new combination, and usually the factory code again to save it.
Mechanical locks may be able to be reset…or not. If they are, there is either a series of dial positions that need to be entered or there may be special tools for resetting that come with the safe. Instructions for resetting the combination will be included in the safe’s manual.
Help from the Manufacturer
If you have lost the safe’s documents, you can call the manufacturer for help. They will need the safe’s serial number and proof of ownership in order to help you. They will probably require notarized proof of some sort, so this isn’t a quick fix. You may be able to expedite the process by going through a professional locksmith. They may be able to contact the manufacturer for you and cut through some of the red tape.
